What the book covers
Complete Men's Health opens with a basic question: why men look after their own health less than women do. In the introduction, Dr. Rodrigo Neves describes the cultural factors that keep men away from the doctor's office, such as the idea that asking for help is a sign of weakness, and explains why prevention is the backbone of the book. The first chapter lays out the fundamentals: the differences in male biology, the immune system, the main health risks men face, and the distinction between risk factors that can and cannot be changed.
The following chapters take one subject at a time. Cardiovascular health: how heart disease develops in men, which risk factors matter most and what prevention looks like. Mental and emotional health: the signs of depression men tend to hide, such as irritability and risk-taking, along with anxiety, stress, suicide risk, and paths to treatment and support. Then come nutrition, with men's nutritional needs at each stage of life, and exercise, with the types of training, age-specific programs and the most common barriers.
The closing chapters cover sexual and reproductive health, including sexual function, the prostate and fertility, and the prevention of the most common diseases, such as prostate cancer, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The book then organizes priorities by age group, explains which exams and screenings to discuss with a doctor at each age, and ends with a chapter on aging well, from the body to cognition and planning for the future. In the conclusion, Dr. Rodrigo Neves proposes a practical action plan: assess the starting point honestly, set realistic goals and change gradually.
